The collective has developed a repertoire of programs to showcase the richness, depth and history of Chinese performing arts. Here is a list of suggested formats which can be tailored according to your interests.
Workshop (45 - 90 minutes)
Your choice of Peking opera or Chinese dance.
Peking opera workshop participants will get hands-on experience in learning some basic symbolic movements and the use of the stylized voice. Specially designed for students in grade 5 and 6.
Chinese dance workshop participants may learn a variety of dances or a specific style.
Make-up Demonstration (15 - 30 minutes)
View the live transformation of a volunteer into an unforgettable character of Peking opera. The creation of the character will be tailored according to your audience.
Lecture (30 - 90 minutes)
A glimpse of Peking opera: its development, artistic training, specific features of the form, legendary divas, traditional and modern repertoires. This is an informative and interactive way to enhance your knowledge and appreciation of this theatrical treasure.
Or, a glimpse of Chinese dance: classical dances, Han folk dances, minority folk dances, Dun Huang dances, and modern dance by Chinese-Canadians.
Performance (15 - 60 minutes)
Enjoy a curated program of Chinese dances performed by Canadian professionals. Witness the distinctive style of the "total theatre" of Peking opera which incorporates dancing, singing, acting, and martial arts. Excerpts of the most renowned repertoires will be presented in full costume to the audience's delight.
